Ham Recipe

Ingredients:
5 lb round ham sliced into half moons
1 can crushed pineapple including juices
1/2 c brown sugar
1 tsp Ground cloves
1/4 c pineapple juice (additional)
1 tsp cornstarch

Directions:
Preheat oven at 350. Layer sliced ham into pan. In small sauce pan Sautee pineapple including liquid, brown sugar, clove, once bubbly. Dissolve cornstarch in additional pineapple juice add slowly to hot pot. Once the contents of pan thickens, pour over ham and bake for 1 to 1 1/2 hrs, loosely covered.

Cabbage

Ingredients:
16 cups of water

1 lb of smoked Turkey

1 chopped whole onion

2 chopped garlic cloves

1 T seasoned salt

2t of Black Pepper

1t Crushed pepper flakes

2 heads of cabbage

1 lb of baby carrots

Directions:
Place water, turkey,onion, garlic, salt, pepper and crushed red pepper simmer in pan for about 1hr. Place cabbage and carrots in pot and simmer for an additional 45 minutes.

It’s been a good week for LaMarr, coming off a 17-13 win at Heinz Field against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The Steelers improved to 4-2. LaMarr, who had two sacks, says the team has been taking care of business.

“A lot of players, a lot of analysts and a lot of people across the league and across the world have been doubting the Pittsburgh Steelers because we’ve been banged up and we’re this ‘old team,’ and I don’t know what’s ‘old’ in this football league, but we’re an ‘old team,’ but we continue to win,” he said.

The Steelers’ next opponent is Arizona. Although the Cardinals are 1-5, each team provides its own challenge.

“Every team is in your way of getting to the Super Bowl. We have one objective at the end of the year and that’s get to a Super Bowl – let’s get number 7,” LaMarr said. “That’s the only objective that I’ve had. Not only getting to the playoffs, but winning a Super Bowl.”

It’s the Western Pennsylvania Humane Society’s goal to find homes for thousands of animals it takes in each year – as many as 14,000. Gretchen Fieser, a spokeswoman for the WPHS, says there are many reasons why pets end up at the shelter.

“It could be financial reasons, it could be health reasons,” she said. “There is a wonderful dog here named Harley, an 11-year-old Chocolate Lab, and he came because his owner had surgery and his owner didn’t have anybody to take care of him or his dog. So, unfortunately the animal came here.”

The shelter not only takes in cats and dogs, but also rabbits, gerbils, hamsters, guinea pigs, birds, reptiles and exotics.

If you’re interested in adopting a pet, come with an open mind – and heart.

“I tell people all the time – put your preconceived notions aside. Don’t come in and say, ‘I want this breed of dog’ because that’s what you’ve always had,” she told LaMarr and Michele. “You might just find your new best friend in a package that you never thought you would ever experience.”

The WPHS hosts events throughout the year to maintain the shelter, including their upcoming event “Cocktails for Canines” on October 28, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Buckhead Saloon at Station Square.

“A lot of people don’t understand the importance of a fireman,” LaMarr said. “Definitely the job they do each and every day fighting fires, the schedule – it’s hectic. I wanted to come here and show a little respect for them.”

The work of first responders is close to LaMarr’s heart.

“My dad was a police officer for 25 years and the firehouse used to be connected to the police station and I remember playing around on the fire truck, taking some pictures – if I could find them I’d definitely show everybody!”

The Steelers were definitely fired up last week, beating the Tennessee Titans 38-17. LaMarr had one and a half sacks, an interception and three tackles.

“I think it was a good win for everybody – not only individually, some of the things that I did, but to go out there and get a win,” he said. “You know, definitely coming off the loss against Houston, having the opportunity to come back here to Heinz Field.”

The Steelers have struggled a bit this season, but LaMarr says it’s all about timing.

“It’s too early in the season to be counting us out because it’s a long season,” he said. “You have 16 games, we lost two and won two – well we won three now.”

“A lot of teams show up early, but a lot of teams don’t show up late,” LaMarr added. “Now, we’re starting to play at the right time.”
